Dynamics NAV 2017 Extended Support Ends Jan. 11, 2027
Microsoft documents a multi-step route from Dynamics NAV 2017 to Dynamics 365 Business Central, and Tigunia has set out what that route requires for mid-market finance teams.

PHOENIX, AZ – Aug 11, 2026 – Extended support for Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2017 ends Jan. 11, 2027, according to Microsoft’s published lifecycle page. Microsoft’s standard migration route provides no direct, one-step upgrade from Dynamics NAV 2017 to Dynamics 365 Business Central online. Tigunia, a Microsoft Solutions Partner, is outlining the migration options Microsoft documents and what each may carry forward.

“An intermediate-version upgrade and the conversion of C/AL customizations are not routine patching exercises,” said Christopher Brock, director of sales at Tigunia. “Organizations should not assume the work fits neatly into a routine quarterly update cycle. In our experience, they should also consider how auditors and insurers may evaluate continued reliance on unsupported software, separately from whether the system remains operational.”

What the January 2027 date changes

Dynamics NAV 2017 follows Microsoft’s Fixed Lifecycle Policy, which defines what Microsoft provides at each stage. Under that policy, and at the supported service pack level, extended support provides paid support plus security updates at no additional cost. The ability to request non-security updates was part of mainstream support, which ended Jan. 11, 2022.

Microsoft’s lifecycle FAQ states that support beyond the end of extended support depends on an Extended Security Update (ESU) program being available. Microsoft also states that ESUs are distributed if and when available. Dynamics NAV 2017 does not appear in Microsoft’s published ESU availability table as of July 31, 2026.

Organizations should not assume that security-update coverage will be available after January 2027, and can confirm their position with Microsoft or their licensing partner.

The route Microsoft documents to Business Central

Microsoft identifies Dynamics NAV 2017 as version 10. For Dynamics NAV 2015 through 2018, the standard route reaches Business Central version 14 on-premises, then version 25 or later, then Business Central online.

Full migration or reimplementation

Dynamics NAV customizations were developed in C/AL, which remained supported through Business Central version 14. Business Central online uses AL-based extensions. From version 14, Microsoft documents a standard full-migration path and a separate reimplementation option.

A full migration is intended to carry forward the existing data and customizations, subject to conversion, compatibility and extension requirements. Microsoft states that it requires converting C/AL customizations to AL extensions and upgrading to the latest version.

Microsoft currently identifies the Business Central 14 Reimplementation tool as a preview feature that is not intended for production use. Microsoft’s documentation for that tool is marked as prerelease and subject to change. The tool migrates essential business data and does not carry legacy C/AL customizations forward.

On the full migration path, data from tables with code customizations cannot be carried forward unless those customizations are converted to AL extensions.

Tigunia has published background information for organizations weighing the move on its NAV to Business Central upgrade page. That page includes a frequently asked questions section and a customer story. Further detail on the platform is available on Tigunia’s Business Central solutions page.
