National recognition transforms a young man’s legacy into an annual call for Americans to practice gratitude, kindness, and compassion

AUSTIN, Texas – August 18, 2026 – National Day Archives has officially declared August 20 as the “National Day of Gratitude,” establishing an annual observance dedicated to inspiring people across America to embrace gratitude, kindness, and compassion in their everyday lives.

The date carries profound significance. August 20 is the birthday of Nihal Charmani, a University of Texas at Austin student whose life, character, and legacy inspired the creation of The Day of Gratitude movement following his passing at the age of 22. Fittingly, the name Nihal carries the meaning “to give gratitude.”

What began as a deeply personal tribute has grown into a movement with a universal purpose: encouraging people to pause, appreciate the people and blessings in their lives, and turn gratitude into meaningful action.

This recognition is not simply about honoring Nihal’s birthday—it is about transforming his legacy into something that can touch millions of lives for generations to come,” said MJ Charmani, Founder and Chairman of The Day of Gratitude. “August 20 will be a reminder for all of us to pause, say thank you, extend kindness, show compassion, and recognize the people who make a difference in our lives.”

Founded in 2024, The Day of Gratitude has continued to expand its impact through Gratitude Workshops, Gratitude Tree Experience and annual Gratitude Gala celebrations. These initiatives have inspired hundreds of people in workplaces and communities to actively practice and share gratitude. The movement has also received Congressional recognition and mayoral proclamations, reflecting growing civic and community support for its mission.

The National Day of Gratitude is designed to belong to everyone. Individuals, families, schools, workplaces, businesses, nonprofits, and communities are encouraged to observe August 20 by thanking someone who has made a difference, writing a note of appreciation, performing an act of kindness, participating in a Gratitude Tree, volunteering, or simply taking time to reflect on life’s blessings.

The vision is simple but powerful: one day can inspire practice, one expression of gratitude can strengthen a relationship, and one act of kindness can create a ripple that reaches an entire community.

With the official recognition of August 20 as the National Day of Gratitude, Nihal Charmani’s birthday becomes more than a day of remembrance. It becomes an enduring invitation to celebrate what connects us as human beings.
