The Forgotten Solar Homeowner: What Happens After the Installer Is Gone?

United States – August 19th, 2026 – As America’s solar industry continues to grow, a quieter problem is emerging. Many homeowners who invested in solar years ago are discovering that the company that originally installed their system has closed, stopped responding, or no longer provides service.
Solar Lumen Systems was created to help address that growing gap. We spoke with Abraham Gardner, co-founder of Solar Lumen Systems, about the homeowners being left behind, the importance of protecting existing solar investments, and his vision for building a dependable support network for communities across the country.
Interviewer: William, thank you for joining us. When did you first recognize that homeowners with existing solar systems were being overlooked?
Abraham Gardner: Thank you for having me. We started looking closely at what happens to homeowners after their solar system is installed. The industry spends an enormous amount of time and money helping people purchase new systems, but much less attention is given to what those homeowners experience five, ten, or fifteen years later.
Many homeowners made a significant investment because they believed solar would lower their energy costs, increase their independence, and provide long-term value for their families. But when they eventually need support, some discover that their original installer has closed, changed ownership, or simply stopped returning their calls.
That was the moment the opportunity became a responsibility for us. These homeowners kept their side of the agreement. They made the investment and trusted the industry. They should not be forgotten simply because the original sale is over.
Interviewer: What kinds of problems are these homeowners experiencing?
Abraham Gardner: The problems vary. Some homeowners are unsure whether their systems are producing what they were promised. Others have lost access to their monitoring, need an inverter replaced, are considering battery storage, or have questions about maintenance and upgrades.
Sometimes the system may still be functioning, but the homeowner has no one they trust to call. They might receive conflicting information or be told that they need to replace something without fully understanding why.
That uncertainty is one of the biggest problems. People do not always know whether they need a repair, an upgrade, better monitoring, or simply an honest explanation of what they already have.
Homeowners deserve clarity before they are asked to make another major financial decision.
Interviewer: Is this primarily a technology problem or a customer-service problem?
Abraham Gardner: It is both, but at its core, I believe it is a relationship problem.
Technology will always change. Equipment ages, household energy needs evolve, and new products enter the market. Those things are expected. The larger issue is what happens when the relationship disappears and the homeowner no longer has anyone willing to take responsibility for helping them understand their system.
A homeowner’s solar journey should not end the day the panels are installed. That is actually when the long-term relationship should begin.
Solar is not a product that someone uses once and forgets. It is a long-term investment connected to the home, the family’s finances, and their future energy needs. The support surrounding that investment should also be long-term.
Interviewer: How is Solar Lumen Systems approaching the problem differently?
Abraham Gardner: Our philosophy is simple: evaluate first, educate second, and recommend only what genuinely makes sense for the homeowner.
We want to begin by understanding the existing system, the homeowner’s concerns, and what they are trying to accomplish. They may want greater energy independence, battery backup, improved monitoring, better performance, or simply reassurance that their system is operating as it should.
From there, we can help them understand their options and, when appropriate, connect them with qualified independent professionals who can perform the necessary work.
We do not want homeowners to feel pressured or confused. We want them to feel informed and confident. Trust is not built by telling people what they should buy. Trust is built by helping them understand why a particular solution may—or may not—be right for them.
ABOUT SOLAR LUMEN SYSTEMS
Solar Lumen Systems helps homeowners understand, protect, and improve their existing solar investments through education, solar health evaluations, battery backup solutions, system-upgrade planning, referrals, and appointment coordination. Work requiring contractor registration, trade licensing, permits, installation, repair, inspection, or warranties is performed by appropriately qualified independent contractors or service providers.
Interviewer: Why does this mission mean so much to you personally?
Abraham Gardner: My entire career has been centered around people—building teams, developing leaders, helping families make important decisions, and creating systems that produce long-term results.
What I have learned is that real success is not measured only by what you sell or how fast a company grows. It is measured by how people feel after they have trusted you.
Did you do what you said you would do? Were you available when something went wrong? Did you treat their family and their investment with the same care you would want someone to show your own?
That is what Solar Lumen Systems means to me. We have an opportunity to build something successful, but we also have an opportunity to build something that matters. I want our company to be known for stepping forward when homeowners feel like everyone else has stepped away.
Interviewer: What role do local communities play in the company’s plans?
Abraham Gardner: Communities are at the center of everything we are building.
We do not want to enter a market, complete a few transactions, and disappear. Our goal is to build lasting relationships with homeowners, local professionals, and reputable independent contractors who already live and work in those communities.
When we enter a new market, we want to create opportunities for local businesses while giving homeowners access to dependable support. That means finding professionals who share our standards, care about their reputation, and understand that every home represents a real family—not simply another project.
If we can help homeowners protect their investments while also helping quality local contractors keep their crews working and grow responsibly, the entire community benefits.
Interviewer: How will you maintain quality as Solar Lumen Systems expands?
Abraham Gardner: Growth without standards is not the kind of growth we want.
Our goal is to build clear processes for evaluations, communication, homeowner education, project coordination, and follow-up. We also want to be thoughtful about the independent professionals we develop relationships with.
Licensing, qualifications, experience, communication, reputation, and accountability all matter. No system can eliminate every possible issue, but homeowners deserve to know that the people working on their homes have been selected carefully and are expected to meet professional standards.
We are not interested in expanding simply so we can say we operate in more places. We want to expand when we have the right people, systems, and support in place to serve those communities properly.
Interviewer: What should homeowners ask before paying for a repair, battery, or major system upgrade?
Abraham Gardner: First, ask whether the existing system has been properly evaluated. A recommendation should be based on the system’s actual condition and performance—not an assumption.
Second, ask for a clear explanation of the problem. What is not working? What evidence supports that conclusion? Is the proposed work necessary now, or are there other options?
Third, ask who will perform the work and whether that company is properly qualified and registered for the work required in that state or jurisdiction.
Homeowners should also ask about warranties, equipment compatibility, monitoring, ongoing support, total cost, and what happens if they have questions after the work is finished.
If someone cannot explain the recommendation in language the homeowner understands, the homeowner should slow down before signing anything.
Interviewer: Do you believe the solar industry has lost the public’s trust?
Abraham Gardner: I do not believe it is fair to judge an entire industry by the actions of some companies. There are many excellent solar professionals doing honest, high-quality work.
However, we also cannot ignore the homeowners who feel disappointed, confused, or abandoned. Rebuilding trust requires more than marketing. It requires listening, transparency, accountability, and consistent follow-through.
We are not here to attack the solar industry. We are here to help strengthen it by addressing a part of the customer journey that has not received enough attention.
The future of solar depends not only on how many new systems are installed. It also depends on how well we take care of the people who already made the decision to go solar.
Interviewer: What is the long-term vision for Solar Lumen Systems?
Abraham Gardner: Our long-term vision is to become one of the most trusted resources in the country for homeowners with existing solar systems.
We want homeowners to know that even if their original installer is no longer available, they are not alone. There can still be a path forward. There can still be someone willing to listen, help them understand their system, and connect them with the appropriate resources.
Over time, we intend to build a network of qualified independent professionals across multiple markets, supported by consistent standards, homeowner education, technology, and strong communication.
We want Solar Lumen Systems to represent confidence, clarity, and continued support throughout the life of a homeowner’s solar investment.
Interviewer: What would you say directly to homeowners who currently feel forgotten?
Abraham Gardner: I would tell them that their concerns are valid and that they deserve answers.
You made an investment in your home and your family’s future. You should not be made to feel that you are asking for too much simply because you want to understand whether your system is working or what your next step should be.
Do not allow fear or frustration to rush you into another decision. Ask questions. Request clear explanations. Understand your options.
Most importantly, do not believe that you have been forgotten. Solar Lumen Systems was created because homeowners like you deserve continued support, honest guidance, and someone willing to help you move forward.
Interviewer: Finally, what do you want Solar Lumen Systems to be remembered for?
Abraham Gardner: I want us to be remembered as the company that showed up.
When homeowners needed clarity, we provided education. When they felt forgotten, we listened. When local professionals needed opportunities, we helped create them. When communities needed a company they could depend on, we worked to earn that trust.
Businesses can grow quickly, but reputations are built one person, one family, and one community at a time.
That is how we intend to build Solar Lumen Systems and that is the standard we intend to carry forward.
