International Society of Medical AI Brings Global Medical AI Leaders to Florence for ISMAI 2026
ISMAI 2026, the International Symposium on Medical AI, will take place in Florence, Italy, on 3-4 December 2026.
The International Society of Medical AI will convene global experts in Florence on 3-4 December for ISMAI 2026, its flagship scientific meeting on evidence, patient safety, clinical judgement, ethics and governance in medical AI.

FLORENCE, Italy – September 15, 2026 – The International Society of Medical AI (ISMAI), an independent, clinician-led international medical AI society, will convene clinicians, AI scientists, researchers and scholars in Florence on 3–4 December 2026 for the International Symposium on Medical AI (ISMAI 2026), its flagship scientific meeting.

Hosted at the Aula Magna CTO, AOU Careggi, the two-day symposium will examine how artificial intelligence is entering clinical medicine and what this means for evidence, patient safety, clinical judgement, ethics, governance and professional responsibility.

The theme of ISMAI 2026 is The Renaissance of Clinical Intelligence. Rather than treating medical AI primarily as a technology question, the programme places its clinical consequences at the centre of the discussion.

Confirmed faculty include Edward H. Shortliffe and Vimla L. Patel of Columbia University, Ewout W. Steyerberg of University Medical Center Utrecht, Niels Peek of the University of Cambridge, Laure Wynants of Maastricht University, Kerstin Denecke of Bern University of Applied Sciences, Giovanni Sartor of the University of Bologna and Iain Buchan of the University of Liverpool, alongside clinicians, scientists, ethicists, legal scholars and healthcare leaders from several countries.

“Artificial intelligence is entering clinical practice faster than medicine has established common approaches to evidence, oversight and responsibility,” said Dr Omar Tujjar, President of the International Society of Medical AI. “ISMAI 2026 is intended as a serious clinical and academic forum. The central questions are what evidence should be required, what must remain under professional judgement, and how responsibility should work when AI becomes part of care.”

The scientific programme is organised around six areas: foundations of medical AI; clinical AI implementation; medical AI validation and patient safety; medical AI ethics and philosophy; healthcare AI governance; and medical AI education and professional formation.

Sessions will examine prospective clinical validation, algorithm monitoring and failure reporting, clinical accountability, regulation, the interaction between human judgement and AI-supported decisions, medical education and the practical implementation of artificial intelligence across the patient pathway.

ISMAI 2026 is clinician-led and vendor-neutral. Scientific programming, faculty selection, abstract review and accreditation are separated from commercial influence.

The symposium carries 12 CME / CPD credits. The call for original research and scholarly work in medical AI is open, with submissions invited across clinical, scientific, ethical, technical and governance themes until 20 October 2026.
