Barasch & McGarry Charitable Foundation Launches September 11th Descendants Scholarship Program to Honor the 25th Remembrance of 9/11
NEW YORK, NY – June 17, 2026 – As the nation approaches the 25th anniversary of September 11, the Barasch & McGarry Charitable Foundation has launched the September 11th Descendants Scholarship Program, a new initiative supporting graduating high school seniors whose families have lost a loved one to a 9/11-related illness.
The scholarship recognizes a generation of young people who have grown up in the shadow of a loss they may not have fully understood when it first occurred. Many lost a parent or grandparent to cancers and other illnesses linked to toxic exposure following the September 11 attacks and the months-long rescue, recovery, and cleanup efforts that followed.
Twenty-five years later, the consequences of 9/11 continue to be felt not only by those who became sick but also by the families they left behind.
“As we mark the 25th remembrance of 9/11, it’s important that we remember the families whose lives were forever changed by the health consequences of that day,” said Michael Barasch, founder of the Barasch & McGarry Charitable Foundation. “Many of these students lost loved ones years after the attacks. Some were very young when it happened. Through this scholarship, we hope to honor the memory of those we lost while helping the next generation pursue their goals and build their futures.”
The Foundation will award scholarships to students who graduated from high school in 2026 and have been accepted to an accredited college, university, vocational school, or trade program. Applicants do not need to be clients of Barasch & McGarry to be eligible.
As part of the application process, students are asked to submit a short essay describing how the loss of their loved one and their family’s experience with 9/11-related illness has shaped their values, resilience, goals, and commitment to their communities.
“We’ve spent more than two decades fighting for the responders, survivors, and families affected by 9/11,” Barasch said. “This scholarship allows us to continue that commitment in a different way. By investing in these young people, we are helping ensure that the legacy of their loved ones lives on through the opportunities they pursue and the lives they build.”
Applications are open through June 30, 2026. Recipients will be selected by an independent review committee and notified by August 3, 2026.
Additional information about eligibility requirements and application materials can be found at the Foundation’s website.
