FLORENCE, S.C. – June 19, 2026 – Dr. Larry Davidson, a board-certified neurosurgeon with more than 30 years of experience treating complex spinal and neurological conditions, has announced the establishment of the Dr. Larry Davidson Scholarship. The annual $1,000 award is open to undergraduate and graduate students who are confirmed and enrolled with the goal of becoming physicians. Applications are accepted through March 31, 2027, and can be submitted at drlarrydavidsonscholarship.com.

The scholarship reflects Dr. Davidson’s belief that financial barriers should never stand between a motivated student and a career in medicine. After spending decades in the operating room and watching healthcare evolve in remarkable ways, he wants to extend that same sense of possibility to the next generation of clinicians and scientists. The award is designed to ease the weight of rising tuition costs while encouraging students to stay the course on what can be a long and demanding path.

About the Scholarship

Applicants must submit a 400- to 600-word essay responding to the following prompt: Neurosurgeons often help patients facing life-changing conditions. Why is compassion an important part of healthcare, science, or leadership, and how do you plan to use compassion in your future profession? The essay prompt is drawn directly from Dr. Davidson’s experience working with patients at some of the most difficult moments of their lives. He has seen firsthand how clinical skill paired with genuine empathy changes outcomes, and he is looking for students who understand that same connection.

The deadline to apply is March 31, 2027. One recipient will receive $1,000 toward their education. Full eligibility requirements and application details are available at drlarrydavidsonscholarship.com.

About Dr. Larry Davidson

Larry Davidson, M.D., FAANS, is the primary partner of Advanced Spinal and Neurosurgical Associates (ASNA) in Florence, South Carolina. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, his medical degree from the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, and completed his neurosurgery residency at the Medical University of South Carolina. He went on to complete a fellowship in complex spinal surgery at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, giving him a foundation that spans both academic rigor and hands-on clinical training.

Dr. Davidson specializes in treating a wide range of back and neck conditions, including disc degeneration and spinal tumors, with a focus on minimally invasive techniques that reduce complications and support faster patient recoveries. He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Florence County Medical Society, and the South Carolina Medical Association. Over the course of his career, he has remained focused on staying at the forefront of advances in spinal surgery, a commitment he captures in his own words: “It’s next to impossible not to be excited about what’s around the corner in our journey of progress.”

Why Neurosurgery Needs the Next Generation Now

The demand for neurosurgeons and spinal specialists in the United States is outpacing the current pipeline. The Association of American Medical Colleges has projected a shortage of physicians across multiple specialties in the coming decade, with surgical fields among the most affected. Neurosurgery, in particular, requires years of training beyond medical school, including a residency that typically lasts 6 to 7 years, followed in many cases by a subspecialty fellowship. That timeline makes financial support during the early stages of a student’s education especially meaningful.

At the same time, advances in minimally invasive surgical techniques, imaging technology, and spinal implant design are changing what neurosurgeons can accomplish for their patients. Procedures that once required long hospital stays and difficult recoveries are increasingly being performed on an outpatient basis. Students entering medicine today will inherit a field that looks very different from the one Dr. Davidson trained in, and will likely see even greater transformation over the course of their careers.

The Dr. Larry Davidson Scholarship is one physician’s effort to help bridge that gap. By investing in students at the start of their journey, Dr. Davidson is contributing to a future healthcare system better equipped to meet patient needs with skill, compassion, and innovation.
