In the pretreatment process of oil processing, crushing is a critical section. This article focuses on the principles, purpose, and core equipment of crushing—the crusher.

Purpose and Principle of Oilseed Crushing

Whether using pressing or solvent extraction to obtain oil from oilseeds, the oilseeds must first be flaked into suitable material for Oil Extraction. To ensure good flaking performance, the oilseeds usually need to be crushed before flaking.

The main purpose of crushing is to break large oilseeds (such as soybeans) into uniformly sized small particles through mechanical force, thereby facilitating subsequent kernel-hull separation and making the particle size suitable for the flaking process.

The working principle of the crusher is that the crushing toothed rolls break large soybeans into particles of a certain size through impact, shearing, squeezing, and grinding actions. Proper particle size control at this stage not only improves subsequent flaking results but also enhances Oil Extraction efficiency and reduces energy consumption.

Types and Basic Structure of Crushers

The most commonly used crushing equipment in oil processing plants is the toothed roll crusher. Depending on the raw material (e.g., soybeans, cottonseeds, peanut kernels), Hammer Crushers and disc crushers may also be used. The following focuses on the basic structure and application of the most widely used toothed roll crusher.

Basic Components

A complete toothed roll crusher consists of a feeding device, crushing rolls, roll gap adjustment device, transmission mechanism, and machine frame.

Feeding Device

The feeding device consists of a storage hopper, feed rolls, permanent magnets, and a feed chute. Its main functions are:

  • Adjusting the feed rate to ensure uniform material flow across the entire roll length;
  • Removing ferrous contaminants from the incoming soybeans to prevent damage to the toothed rolls;
  • Guiding the material smoothly into the crushing zone via the feed chute, avoiding local accumulation or empty running.

Crushing Roll Configuration

Two pairs of upper and lower toothed rolls are arranged horizontally in parallel. Each pair of toothed rolls rotates toward each other, with one being a fast roll and the other a slow roll. The roll teeth of each pair are arranged in a “tip-to-tip” configuration. This arrangement effectively enhances the shearing action on the oilseeds and improves crushing efficiency.

Working Process and Adjustment

During operation, the speed difference between the two rolls, combined with the shearing and squeezing action of the roll teeth, cuts the soybeans falling between the rolls into small pieces, achieving the crushing purpose. Adjusting the roll gap via the roll gap adjustment device ensures that the crushed particle size meets process requirements.

The roll gap adjustment device typically offers manual or automatic adjustment, allowing operators to flexibly adjust according to incoming material conditions and required product particle size.

Equipment Performance Requirements

A good crusher should meet the following requirements:

  • Rugged and durable, suitable for continuous industrial production;
  • Low operating noise to improve the working environment;
  • Uniform crushed particle size to reduce rework;
  • Easy operation, such as automatic roll release, with intelligent mode allowing manual roll gap adjustment during operation;
  • Easy maintenance, such as quick and simple roll change to minimize downtime;
  • Long roll life to reduce long-term operating costs.

Processing Capacity and Selection Considerations

With the continuous large-scale development of oil processing plants, single-unit processing capacity has become a key selection criterion for crushers. The processing capacity of a crusher is essentially determined by the size and rotational speed of the crushing rolls.

In actual production, oil processing enterprises of different scales have significantly different requirements for crushing equipment:

  • Small and medium-sized plants pay more attention to cost-effectiveness, stability, and ease of maintenance;
  • Large and ultra-large plants focus more on single-unit capacity, continuous operation capability, and consistency of the output particle size.
