SHENZHEN – Jul 31, 2026 – On July 28, 2026, Shenzhen Natural History Museum officially opened in the Yanzi Lake area of Pingshan District, Shenzhen.

As the largest comprehensive natural history museum in South China and one of Shenzhen’s “major cultural facilities for the new era,” the museum takes visitors on a journey through the cosmos, Earth, life, and our urban home across eight themed galleries.

Silkroad Visual contributed to the exhibition design, exhibition delivery, and digital content production of several core galleries, helping create a new public venue that connects natural science, public education, and urban culture.

01 Mountains and Waters in Harmony: A New Museum Opens

Shenzhen Natural History Museum occupies a site of 42,000 square metres, with a total gross floor area of approximately 105,300 square metres and 35,200 square metres of exhibition space. Inspired by the form of a river delta, the building’s fluid, undulating silhouette echoes the winding Pingshan River. It blends into the surrounding Yanziling, Pingshan River, and Yanzi Lake Wetland, creating a natural and cultural environment in which architecture and landscape coexist.

On the morning of July 28, the opening ceremony of Shenzhen Natural History Museum was held in the museum’s first-floor atrium. During the ceremony, the museum signed strategic cooperation agreements with the Geological Museum of China, the National Natural History Museum of China, and the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, joining forces to establish the Greater Bay Area as a leading hub for natural science communication.

02 Eight Galleries, One Epic Story of Nature

Shenzhen Natural History Museum features eight themed galleries—Cosmos, Earth, Evolution, Dinosaur, Human, Biology, Ecology, and Homeland. Following a narrative path from the origins of the universe to Shenzhen’s local natural environment, the galleries bring the overarching theme of “Connecting People with Nature” to life.

Cosmos Gallery: Beginning with ancient star charts, traditional astrolabes, and landmark astronomical telescopes, the gallery traces humanity’s exploration of the universe. Genuine meteorite specimens from deep space reveal the evolution of galaxies, the formation of planets, and the birth of the solar system.

Earth Gallery: The gallery looks back across 4.6 billion years of Earth’s transformation from a barren planet into the cradle of life. Rock and mineral specimens help visitors understand plate tectonics, geological change, and the formation of mountains, rivers, and landforms.

Evolution Gallery: Structured around 3.8 billion years of life’s evolution, the gallery charts the journey from single-celled life and multicellular organisms to plants and animals on land and the emergence of humans. It explains fundamental evolutionary processes such as genetic variation and environmental adaptation.

Dinosaur Gallery: Large dinosaur skeletons and reconstructed environments bring the Mesozoic world to life. Drawing on palaeontological discoveries from Guangdong and Jiangxi, the gallery explores how dinosaurs lived, reproduced, and ultimately became extinct.

Human Gallery: Centred on the question “Where did we come from?”, the gallery traces the evolutionary paths of primates and early humans. It brings together key findings from paleoanthropological research in Africa, Eurasia, China, Guangdong, and Guangxi.

Biology Gallery: Guided by biological classification, the gallery reveals the remarkable survival strategies of plants and animals through their form, structure, physiology, and behaviour. It also encourages visitors to consider endangered species and the importance of biodiversity conservation.

Ecology Gallery: The gallery presents major ecosystems including forests, grasslands, wetlands, deserts, oceans, polar regions, and mountains. It explains the interdependence between living organisms and their environments while addressing contemporary ecological challenges such as invasive species.

Homeland Gallery: Returning the focus to Shenzhen, the gallery showcases native species, migratory birds, and rare and protected plants and animals. It tells the story of a city whose growth and development are increasingly integrated with its natural environment.

For the development of the galleries, Silkroad Visual once again partnered with international exhibition design studio ATELIER BRÜCKNER of Germany. Bringing together their expertise through cross-border collaboration, the two teams explored new ways to communicate natural science, translating immense timescales and complex scientific knowledge into a visitor experience that is clear, accessible, and immersive. 03 Culture + Technology: Creating New Value for the Sector

The completion of Shenzhen Natural History Museum strengthens Shenzhen’s network of public cultural spaces and adds a major public institution for natural science to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. By integrating natural science research, science education, and immersive experiences into the urban public realm, the museum offers a new model for how large natural history institutions can engage and communicate with the public.
