New Data Shows Salary Transparency in Tech Hiring Tracks the Law, Not Company Culture – With India at Zero Percent
UNITED STATES – AUGUST 4, 2026 – An analysis of 2,347 live data science, machine learning, and AI job postings across the US and India has found that salary disclosure closely tracks state-level pay transparency law rather than industry norms or company policy, with India showing zero disclosed salaries across 263 listings from 77 multinational employers.
The analysis, from finddatasciencejobs.com, found that postings in the 13 US jurisdictions requiring salary ranges disclosed one 80.2% of the time, versus 50.0% in states without such requirements. Sitewide, 45.2% of listings now disclose a salary, above the 37.8% a widely cited 2026 industry report found for data science postings generally.
The most striking finding centers on India, where no statutory salary disclosure requirement exists. Of 263 India-based listings analyzed, spanning employers including Mastercard, Barclays, Bosch, Gartner, Target, Adobe, and eBay, none disclosed a salary range. Adobe’s US postings disclose a salary 100% of the time; its India postings disclosed one 0% of the time in the same dataset. Researchers tested the finding for errors and found three India listings that initially appeared to disclose a salary, all from Google postings using a template that carries a US dollar range regardless of the role’s actual country. Corrected, India held at exactly zero.
“The pattern is almost mechanical,” said Shaqeeq Khan, founder at finddatasciencejobs.com. “Where a law requires a number, employers post one. Where it doesn’t, most don’t, regardless of how transparent a company claims to be elsewhere. India makes that clear: the same global employers that disclose routinely in the US show zero disclosure there.”
The 45.2% sitewide figure includes salary ranges pulled from both structured data fields and, on platforms that don’t provide one, directly from job description text.
finddatasciencejobs.com plans to refresh the analysis quarterly.
