Epigenetics Coach Becca Roses on What the Science of Epigenetic Aging Means for Everyday Wellness Choices
HOUSTON, TX – September 12, 2026 – September is Healthy Aging Month, the annual observance run by Healthy Aging magazine, and Becca Roses, founder of the genetic wellness practice Mind Body Genes, is using it to make a narrower argument than the one the category usually makes. What she wants people to take from epigenetics is not what it might eventually reverse, but what it explains about why standard wellness advice lands so differently on different people.
The Gap Between the Research and the Marketing
Epigenetics describes how genes get read rather than what they say. The sequence stays the same across a life while the pattern of chemical marks that regulate expression shifts, and those marks respond to inputs including nutrition, sleep, movement, and sustained stress.
That much is mainstream science. What has grown around it, Roses argues, is a consumer market that treats it as a promise rather than an explanation.
“The research says your daily inputs influence how your genes are expressed,” Roses said. “It does not say you can undo time, and every time somebody sells it that way, they make the honest version harder to hear. The honest version is still worth hearing, because it explains something people genuinely find confusing about their own bodies.”
Why the same advice produces different results
Roses points to the experience that brings most people to her practice. They have followed reasonable advice, often for years, and the results have not matched the effort. The standard interpretation is that they did it wrong.
Her interpretation is that the advice was written for an average person who does not exist. How efficiently someone runs the methylation pathway, how they handle caffeine and alcohol, what their micronutrient demands look like, how their body manages inflammation, all of it varies, and the same protocol, followed the same way for the same number of weeks, lands on different underlying setups.
What Healthy Aging Month Is Useful For
Roses is direct about what she thinks the observance should and should not be used to sell. “September gets used to launch a lot of anti-aging products, and I would rather use it to say something duller and truer,” she said. “The levers I keep coming back to with clients are consistent sleep, adequate protein and plants, regular movement including something that loads your muscles, drinking less alcohol, and getting chronic stress genuinely down. None of that is proprietary. It is what we coach, and we coach the sequence and the fit rather than the list.”
The practice’s stated scope is expression patterns relating to nutrition and micronutrients, stress response, hormones, energy, inflammation, detox, sleep and circadian rhythm, and fitness recovery.
Where the practice draws its boundary
Mind Body Genes states plainly that its work is wellness work rather than clinical work. Its published material says the goal is not to diagnose disease, predict a client’s future, or label anyone as broken. Roses treats that boundary as load-bearing rather than as a disclaimer. The practice’s published material states that the Blueprint is not a replacement for a physician, lab work, therapy, emergency care, or a treatment plan, and that a wellness plan built from it should support appropriate clinical care rather than replace it.
“A wellness practice that blurs that line is not being generous with its clients,” she said. “It is borrowing authority it has not earned, and eventually somebody gets hurt by it.”
