New Book Introduces Cultural Context Discipline™ Framework to Help Adults Understand Children’s Behavior Before Responding to It

Boyd-Johnson developed CCD through more than 30 years of experience in early childhood education and child development. Her years of working with children and families helped her see that the same behavior may have very different reasons behind it.

Cultural Context Discipline™ does not ask adults to remove rules, limits, or accountability. Children still need clear expectations, guidance, responsibility, and opportunities to learn from their actions. The framework encourages adults to understand the situation first, then choose a response that helps the child learn while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
“The goal is not to eliminate consequences. The goal is to ensure that consequences, teaching strategies, and interventions are informed by understanding,” said Boyd-Johnson.

The process begins with observing what is happening, assessing the situation, working to understand what may be influencing the behavior, and then choosing a response. This gives adults a chance to slow down and make thoughtful decisions instead of reacting only to what they see.
