PHOENIX – Aug 6, 2026 –<\/strong> Chapter 7 bankruptcy filings increased 14.7% and chapter 13 bankruptcy filings increased 7.6% year over year during the 12-month period ending June 30, 2026, according to the latest statistics published by the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts.<\/p>\n

Overall U.S. bankruptcy filings increased by 65,982 cases, rising 12.2% from 542,529 to 608,511. Chapter 7 bankruptcy filings increased by 48,840 cases and accounted for approximately 74% of the overall increase in filings.<\/p>\n

Bankruptcy Filings Increased Across the Major Chapters<\/strong><\/p>\n

The latest U.S. Courts figures show year-over-year increases across the major bankruptcy chapters:<\/p>\n

• Chapter 7 bankruptcy filings increased 14.7%, from 333,321 to 382,161.<\/p>\n

• Chapter 13 bankruptcy filings increased 7.6%, from 200,290 to 215,490.<\/p>\n

• Chapter 11 bankruptcy filings increased 22.7%, from 8,408 to 10,320.<\/p>\n

• Chapter 12 bankruptcy filings increased 19.1%, from 282 to 336.<\/p>\n

• Business bankruptcy filings increased 16.9%, from 23,043 to 26,941.<\/p>\n

• Nonbusiness bankruptcy filings increased 12.0%, from 519,486 to 581,570.<\/p>\n

Chapter 7 bankruptcy cases accounted for approximately 62.8% of all filings during the latest reporting period. Chapter 13 bankruptcy cases represented approximately 35.4%.<\/p>\n

Making Bankruptcy Filing Statistics Easier to Understand<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts publishes bankruptcy filing statistics four times each year. Each release reports the total number of cases filed during the previous 12 months for periods ending March 31, June 30, September 30 or December 31.<\/p>\n

For example, the figures for the period ending June 30, 2026, include bankruptcy cases filed from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026. The figures are not monthly totals or year-to-date totals.<\/p>\n
