Wantagh, New York, Nuclear Medicine Technologist and musician Vincent (Vinny) Colardi says the most successful careers are often the ones that don’t follow a straight line.<\/div>\n

Wantagh, NY – August 15, 2026 –<\/strong> Many students and young professionals feel pressure to have their careers mapped out before graduation. Vincent (Vinny) <\/a>Colardi <\/a>believes that mindset can cause people to overlook opportunities that better match their interests and strengths.<\/p>\n

After earning a Bachelor of Arts in History from SUNY Old Westbury, Colardi realized he wanted a career that combined science, technology, and direct patient care. He returned to school, earned a Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Medicine Technology from Molloy University, graduating Magna Cum Laude, and now works as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist at St. Francis Hospital South Bay Cardiovascular in West Islip, New York.<\/p>\n

Alongside his healthcare career, Colardi continues to pursue another lifelong passion as the lead guitarist and songwriter for the band Oolong, touring throughout the United States.<\/p>\n

According to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, many college graduates ultimately work in careers that are not directly related to their undergraduate major. As industries continue to evolve, career changes and lifelong learning have become increasingly common.<\/p>\n

“I used to think changing direction meant I was starting over,” said Colardi. “Looking back, it was really about finding the right fit. My history degree taught me how to think critically and communicate clearly, and I still use those skills every day.”<\/p>\n

Colardi says his experience moving between different clinical rotations also reinforced the value of remaining open to new perspectives. During his education, he trained at NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center, NewYork-Presbyterian Columbia University Irving Medical Center, St. Francis Hospital, NY Cancer and Blood Specialists, and RLS Radiopharmacy.<\/p>\n

“Every hospital had experienced professionals who approached their work a little differently,” he said. “Instead of trying to decide which way was best, I focused on learning something from each environment.”<\/p>\n

His creative work has also shaped the way he approaches his profession. As a musician, Colardi has spent years writing songs, studying jazz guitar, and touring with Oolong, experiences he believes strengthened skills that translate into healthcare, including discipline, preparation, and collaboration.<\/p>\n

“I’ve never felt like I had to choose between science and creativity,” Colardi said. “Having interests outside of work has made me more curious, more adaptable, and ultimately better at what I do.”<\/p>\n

What Young Professionals Can Do<\/strong><\/p>\n

Colardi encourages students and early-career professionals to take a long-term view of career development:<\/p>\n
