Some of his most practical lessons have come from working directly with customers, particularly during his time in automotive sales.

The South Riding, Virginia entrepreneur is currently working alongside his father to develop a new business. As they research manufacturers and evaluate the steps required to move forward, Fischer says his previous experience in customer-facing roles continues to influence how he approaches the process.

Before pursuing entrepreneurship, Fischer worked at Manhattan Pizza from 2022 to 2023 as a delivery driver and inside employee. He later transitioned into automotive sales as a sales consultant at Chevrolet, where he helped customers identify vehicles that suited their individual needs.

Fischer says those experiences taught him that sales is about more than completing a transaction. It requires listening carefully, communicating with different types of people, responding to setbacks, and adjusting when an approach is not working.

He identifies five sales lessons that he believes can be particularly useful for young people preparing to enter entrepreneurship.

1. Listen Before Trying to Sell

One of Fischer’s primary takeaways from automotive sales is the importance of listening before offering a solution.

Customers often arrive with different priorities, questions, budgets, and expectations. Fischer learned that assuming what someone wants can make the sales process more difficult.

Instead, he focused on understanding the individual first.

“Every customer is different,” Fischer says. “You have to listen and understand what they actually need before you can figure out how to help them.”

He believes the same principle applies to entrepreneurship. Before developing an offering or deciding how to position a business, entrepreneurs need to understand the people they expect to serve.

2. Understand the Customer’s Actual Need

Listening is only the first part of the process. Fischer says sales also taught him to separate what a customer initially asks for from what may ultimately fit that person’s needs.

In automotive sales, his role involved helping customers evaluate different options rather than assuming one vehicle would work for everyone.

That experience has influenced how Fischer thinks about building a business.

He believes entrepreneurs can become too focused on what they want to sell instead of asking whether it solves a meaningful customer problem.

For Fischer, understanding that distinction can help a business make better decisions from the beginning.

3. Treat Rejection as Information

Sales also gave Fischer direct experience with rejection.

Not every conversation resulted in a sale, and not every interaction went according to plan. Fischer learned that focusing only on the disappointment of an unsuccessful outcome did little to improve the next one.

Instead, he began looking for useful information in those experiences.

“You can’t control every outcome,” Fischer says. “What you can control is whether you learn something from it and what you do the next time differently.”

He sees that mindset as increasingly relevant as he enters entrepreneurship, where decisions can be made without knowing exactly how customers, suppliers, or the market will respond.

4. Review What Went Wrong While It Is Still Fresh

One particular experience during Fischer’s time in automotive sales helped solidify this approach.

After an unsuccessful customer interaction resulted in a lost sale, Fischer took time to mentally review the conversation. Rather than moving on immediately, he considered what happened, where the interaction changed, and what he could have handled differently.

“I walked myself through everything that happened and why it happened,” Fischer recalls.

The exercise was practical rather than theoretical. When another customer arrived, Fischer had an immediate opportunity to apply what he had learned.

The next interaction resulted in a sale.

For Fischer, the experience demonstrated the value of reviewing mistakes while the details are still clear. A setback alone does not necessarily create improvement. The value comes from identifying what can be changed and applying that information the next time a similar situation occurs.

5. Adapt the Next Interaction

Fischer considers adaptability one of the most important qualities he developed through sales.

A technique that works with one customer may not work with another. Conditions can change quickly, and relying too heavily on a single approach can make it difficult to respond effectively.

Fischer describes himself as someone who is “always learning,” and he intentionally seeks out unfamiliar situations where he has to observe, ask questions, and adjust.

That approach is now carrying over into the early stages of entrepreneurship.

Fischer and his father are currently researching potential manufacturing partners as they develop their business. Details regarding the company’s final product offering, pricing, target market, and launch timeline have not yet been announced.

Rather than rushing those decisions, Fischer says he wants to use the development stage to learn how the different parts of the business will work together.

The transition from employee to entrepreneur has also changed the scope of the decisions in front of him. In sales, Fischer was responsible for his own interactions with customers. In entrepreneurship, decisions about suppliers, operations, customers, and the business’s long-term direction are increasingly connected.

For young entrepreneurs, Fischer believes customer-facing experience can provide a useful foundation before taking on those broader responsibilities.

Sales does not teach every aspect of running a company. It does, however, create regular opportunities to practice communication, problem-solving, accountability, and adaptation under real-world conditions.

Those are skills Fischer intends to continue developing as he and his father move forward with their plans.

“I’m still learning,” Fischer says. “For me, the important thing is taking what I’ve learned from each experience and using it to make a better decision the next time.”

As Fischer continues developing his business in South Riding, he sees his earlier roles not as separate chapters, but as practical preparation for the responsibilities that come with building something of his own.

About Quentin Fischer

Quentin Fischer is an entrepreneur based in South Riding, Virginia.
