The 12-step program was created by the founders of Alcohol Anonymous (AA).

The guidelines were put in place to set standards for the best way to overcome alcohol addiction, and the program has been a success ever since its creation. The program’s structure allows all types of support groups to adapt the program’s parameters to their own needs. As such, there are a number of 12-step groups in Arizona that address a complete range of addictions, which include cocaine, compulsive behavior, and even those trying to break out of debt.

While 12-step programs are heavily spiritual in many instances, anyone can benefit as a result. The focus is quite often on the presence of God as each person accepts him. This allows for different interpretations of individual religious beliefs. The good thing about the 12-step program is there is no wrong way to approach it. It works whether a person is religious or not. However, some recovering addicts may need to revisit a certain number of steps, or even work on several steps at the same time.

Consider the following 12 steps as defined by the program.

1. The recovering individual admits they are powerless over their addiction, and that clinical help and support is needed. Power is regained through clinical treatments.

2. Program participants believe that a power, greater than themselves, can help restore their lives.

3. Participants make the decision to turn their lives and will over to the care of their creator, or what they believe to be the higher power in their life.

4. The program helps individuals to make a sweeping and moral inventory of their own life.

5. They admit to themselves, other human beings, and to God the nature of their wrongdoing.

6. They are entirely ready to work with a higher power to remove the flaws and defects from their character.

7. Participants are ready to humbly ask God to remove their shortcomings.

8. They are ready to make a list of those they have harmed along the way because of their addiction. They are willing to make amends to all of them. An exception would be if making amends would harm the other person.

9. They are committed to taking a personal inventory and admitting when they are wrong.

10. Participants are committed to improving their conscious contact with God through meditation and prayer. The ideal goal is to carry this message to others as well, and to practice these principles in all of their affairs.

The first stage of rehab is detox. Alcoholics may have abused liquor for years before making the turn to seek help. Once a person navigates detox, and their body regains balance, they are ready for counseling and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Counseling is effective as it gives addicts a chance to examine their own thinking and other factors that led to their addiction. The goal of rehab is to treat the addiction and any hidden mental disorders as well like depression, anxiety, or mood swings. Treating the whole individual helps to greatly reduce the chances of future relapse.
