Environmental Health Pioneer Jeff Charlton to Speak at BSEM Training Day on Ecological Approaches to Healthy Homes
LONDON, UK – Environmental health expert and industry pioneer Jeff Charlton has been announced as a featured speaker at the BSEM Training Day: Ecological Approaches to Healthy Homes in June 2025.
At this event, he will share his groundbreaking work on the health risks associated with toxic mould and contaminated indoor environments, and offer insights into ecological strategies for creating healthier living spaces.
Jeff’s journey into environmental health spans over four decades, shaped by a unique blend of scientific expertise, global experience, and personal tragedy. Beginning his career as a Technician in the Medical Physics and Nuclear Medicine Department at St George’s Hospital in the 1970s, Jeff went on to apply his technical knowledge in the British Army, setting the stage for a distinguished international career in environmental decontamination.
From fire and flood restoration to crime scene and chemical clean-up, Jeff has led operations across the UK, the Caribbean, and the Middle East, including a high-profile post-Gulf War contract decontaminating the Emir’s Palace in Kuwait. His innovative techniques later earned him a place training military contractors in the United States.
Upon returning to the UK, Jeff founded The British Damage Management Association and Building Forensics, now recognised as Europe’s leading authority on mould and building-related illness. His contributions have shaped professional standards and informed government policy, including presentations to the House of Commons select committee on flood response.
But it was a deeply personal crisis that propelled his mission into overdrive. When his daughter was diagnosed with aggressive leukaemia, Jeff uncovered toxic mould in her flat as a contributing factor; a discovery that drove him to expose the link between environmental contamination and chronic illness.
In response to the lack of adequate testing during his daughter’s health crisis, Jeff launched Mould Lab, a companion service to Building Forensics. It offers both professional-grade testing and accessible DIY solutions for households that can’t afford traditional remediation services. Today, his work helps countless families identify and tackle environmental risks that often go undetected by mainstream medicine.
Despite facing institutional resistance, including a PACE interview for speaking out, Jeff has remained steadfast in his pursuit of reform. As a Founding Member of the International Society for Environmentally Acquired Illness, a member of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, and a co-author of numerous scientific papers, he continues to bridge the gap between environmental science and medical awareness.
Jeff Charlton’s appearance at the BSEM Training Day: Ecological Approaches to Healthy Homes will further spotlight the urgent need for collaboration between clinicians, researchers, and environmental professionals in tackling hidden health hazards in the home. Attendees will gain valuable insights into the practical application of ecological approaches in maintaining healthier homes.
